What is the Macronutrient and Heart Disease Risk Study?

The Macronutrient and Heart Disease Risk Study, or MACRO for short, is an important research project designed to determine if changing the carbohydrate, protein and fat content of a diet will lower blood pressure, blood cholesterol, blood sugar and reduce body weight.

How would I know if I am eligible?

We are looking for healthy volunteers, 22 to 75 years, with a body mass index (BMI) of 30-45 kg/m2 (30% or more above your ideal body weight).  We will calculate your BMI by measuring your height and weight and ask you some questions about your health to see if you qualify.

What would be required of me if I qualify?

If you qualify and agree to participate, you will be invited to take part in a 12-month trial where you will be assigned to one of two groups.  While on-study you will receive specific dietary instructions on the amounts of protein, carbohydrate and fat to consume, however, you will not know which group you are assigned.

During the study you will also be asked to come into the clinic for study visits where we will check your blood pressure, your cholesterol, your blood sugar as well as some other tests.  Our dietitian will also ask you questions about your food intake.
